Dr. West has played an important role in Eastern Idaho since settling here to practice Orthopedic Surgery in 1995.
He completed the prestigious Trauma Fellowship at Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington, and has been active in advancing the science and practice of trauma care in Eastern Idaho, currently serving as Orthopedic Trauma Liaison at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Idaho’s only certified Level 2 trauma center. As a Fellowship-trained Orthopedic Traumatologist, Dr. West has interest, skill, and experience in the treatment of complex fractures.
Beyond trauma care, Dr. West has kept an active interest in advancements in treatment of problems of the lower extremities. He has introduced the minimally-traumatic anterior hip incision for artificial hip replacement (smaller incision, faster recovery, lower dislocation rate) to eastern Idaho, has performed greater than 200 partial knee replacements, and as a member of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, has brought advancements in Foot and Ankle care to the region. He is also serves as a consultant to the Wound Care programs at Mountain View Hospital and Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
Dr. West graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine and completed his Residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, HI. It was in the Army where Dr. West honed his skills in arthroscopic surgery of shoulder and knee injuries (active duty troops have large numbers of “sports medicine” type injuries). At Fort Bragg, NC, serving the 82nd Airborn, Dr. West became interested in the care of complex traumatic injuries, after caring for hundreds of parachuting accidents. The fellowship in trauma followed his Army service, and he practiced as an Orthopedic Traumatologist in Southern California prior to moving to Idaho Falls.
Past academic appointments have included Clinical Instructor and Consulting Professor at Duke University and The University of Washington. Dr. West currently is a Clinical Instructor at Idaho State University. He has published or presented papers on Osteomyelitis, Failure of Total Hip Components, Cervical Spine injuries, Shoulder and Calcaneal (heel) fractures.
Dr. West is a founding member and vice chairman of the Board of Directors at Mountain View Hospital, a Community Hospital providing a broad range of services to the communities in Southeast Idaho.
